Dear Yarrow Point Residents,

Many of you have called Town Hall or me directly about the appalling conditions of the roundabout, the Town entrance, the dead grass along 92nd Avenue over the 520, the general overgrown vegetation between Yarrow Point and Clyde Hill over the 520 (the “520 lid”), and the disrepair of lighting along the area’s pedestrian passages.

This neglected property and airspace was designed, built, and is owned, controlled and maintained by the Washington State Department of Transportation (“WSDOT”). WSDOT alone is responsible for all associated maintenance and liability.

However, WSDOT recently notified Yarrow Point, Medina, Hunts Point and Clyde Hill that they would no longer maintain their property. This was surprising for a number of reasons but notably because the Points Communities had been in mediation with WSDOT over the last 18 months and had been working towards a mutually agreeable solution with WSDOT for continued maintenance of the 520 lid. That makes it particularly frustrating that WSDOT would unilaterally decide to abandon their responsibilities.

I encourage you to share your frustration with Julie Meredith, Secretary of Transportation at julie.meredith@wsdot.wa.gov or at WSDOT’s main office  (360) 705-7000. Please cc our Legislative Representatives in your correspondence (coordinates below).

We hope WSDOT will resume their property maintenance as soon as possible.

As always, I continue to welcome your thoughts and concerns about this, as well as any other items that effect our Town.

Warmly,

Katy

See below for message from Medina

Medina Residents,

The City has been made aware of deteriorating conditions on the SR 520 lid located within the City of Medina. In particular, complaints have been received concerning accumulating garbage on site and unmaintained vegetation. The City shares these concerns.

The SR 520 lid is property owned, controlled, and maintained by WSDOT. For its own reasons, WSDOT recently decided that it would no longer maintain the lid and notified the City of Medina accordingly.

This property is not owned or maintained by Medina but is property of the Washington State Department of Transportation. WSDOT alone is responsible for its associated liability and maintenance. The City encourages concerned parties to contact the Washington State Department of Transportation, the Office of the Governor, and/or your Legislative representatives:
